CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE

Carraway Residence, West Hollywood, California, United States

Everyone remained frozen, absolutely silent and stunned for a full thirty seconds. Finally, London lifted his hand and pointed at the strange dragon floating in the air.

“You’re my chimera?” he asked, his voice full of doubt and wonder.

The pretty blue dragon nodded, batting her eyelashes at him. “Of course I am, darling. You’re half mortal and half magician, just like Rose here. So you’d get a chimera who could speak. And can I just say, it is so nice to have that privilege here in the Land of Mortals. What a neat thing to be able to do what most can’t.”

“Tell me about it, sister,” Elvis sang, flying over next to the dragon.

It really baffled Rose’s brain to see the red and blue dragons snaking their way through the air together, floating in place but moving as if churning through water.

“Wait, are you two related?” Rose had to ask.

The female dragon shook her head. “No, not really. I mean, all chimeras are in a way, but Elvis isn’t really my brother. I just borrowed his idea to be a Chinese dragon because I wanted to fly and hopefully one day, breathe fire, like him. He’s my idol.” She pressed her hands together, placing them beside her face as she gave Elvis an adoring look.

“Oh, angels above…” Rose said, looking at London. “I’m so very sorry.”

He laughed, waving her off. “I actually adore Elvis too and it’s neat that my chimera is a dragon. I always was envious of you, Rose.”

“See!” Elvis said to her, sticking his tongue out at Rose before turning his attention back to the blue dragon. “It’s good to see you. I’ve been expecting you for like forever. Where have you been?”

“Wait,” Rose interrupted. “This is who you were buying things for and wanting to gift wrap something for? You knew about her?”

“Of course,” Elvis replied, giving Rose an unapologetic expression. “But I couldn’t say anything. Not until she showed up.” He turned his snout on the female chimera. “So what took you so long?”

“Paperwork,” she replied in a country accent. It wasn’t like Mama Jamba’s southern accent, but more like she was about to break into the song, “On the Road Again.”

“Oh, well, paperwork can take forever,” Elvis said, grinning. “You’re here now.”

“And you are?” London asked, giving the strange blue dragon a curious expression.

She bowed slightly. “You can call me Dolly. That’s the name I chose and this is the form I picked. I’m your chimera and disguised as a Chinese blue dragon. I hope that’s all right, because I just thought it would be fun. But also, I picked it because it’s what seemed to suit your personality best. Just like how Elvis suits Rose’s eccentric personality in his form.”

“I’m not sure I’d say he suits my personality as much as challenges my sanity,” Rose muttered.

Dolly snickered. “But I’ll admit, I’m not as eccentric as Elvis. I won’t keep you up at night, London. I like my beauty rest.
